Policy priorities in the pivotal year that will be 2021-22

In the wake of the annus horribilis that was 2020, ONN’s board, policy committee, and staff have been strategizing about our role in positioning the nonprofit sector to navigate the changing landscape and playing a pivotal role in an equitable recovery. We’ve overhauled our policy priorities to ensure we’re focusing on what we see is most needed at this time. Although everyone’s eyes are on...

Weaving advocacy into nonprofit work: Maryam Pandi

ONN was thrilled to welcome SACK’s Maryam Pandi to Nonprofit Driven 2020. This first-person profile is part of an incentive prize at the conference to recognize attendees and their work. I moved to Canada from Iran five years ago. In the beginning, like many other newcomers, I spent a lot of time figuring out my voice within the community I lived in. I’ve always been...

5 ways your nonprofit can take action now to support Indigenous communities

The news of 215 Indigenous children killed in a residential school in Kamloops, the community of Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc, is devastating. While the recently announced state of emergency will hopefully help slow infection rates, we  need stronger supports to ensure that people can afford to stay at home. Paid sick days would provide a more fair, equitable, and consistent approach to...

ONCA update

The Government of Ontario has introduced motion #89 in the Legislature. This motion extends the Ontario Not-for-Profit Corporations Act (ONCA) by another year, until December 2021. This was necessary because legislation is automatically cancelled if it does not take effect in 10 years, and the ONCA was passed in 2010 so would be cancelled if it was not proclaimed by December 2020. We have been assured that the ONCA is...
